A Poem for Dr. Cainan Mui’s 60th Birthday! (Dean of the School of Church Music- SBC)


You will understand most of this poem only if you have studied Tonal Harmony and Counterpoint.

 

A brand new year is dawning

As your 60th year you start

We’d like to make this wish

Right from our very hearts

 

May God be your life’s ‘Tonic’

And ‘Dominant’ be his grace

May He keep you from ‘False Relations’

In ‘Harmony’ all your days

 

May He weave your life’s short ‘Motive’

In an ‘Invention’ for all to see

And also sustain the ‘Counter-Motive’

Who’s none but Mrs. Alice Mui

 

‘Suspensions’ are for a reason

Life’s ‘Dissonances’ you must see

God will bring ‘Resolutions’

But ‘Preparations’ must precede

 

In your life’s long journey

‘Episodes’ you will see

These are all your students

Of Counterpoint and Harmony

 

We ask the Lord to bless you

And keep you in his presence

With that we end this poem

On a joyful ‘Perfect Cadence’
